As a consequence, the grass has turned a fetching shade of blonde, the leaves on the fruit trees droop pathetically and the village dogs can be seen swimming in a heat haze. Another glorious, hot summer, the only creatures with any energy seem to be the cigales. Sit back with a cool glass of your favourite long drink, enjoy the heat, and read our latest little gems. We have a new recipe of the month for you to try. And if you're going to have a vegetable of the month, August must surely merit the tomato? Tomates Marmandaise is a classic southern French dish, humming with garlic and specially adapted for the gorgeous tomatoes of Marmande, at their best right now. Try it one day for lunch, unless of course you have a romantic assignation in the afternoon with anyone other than your lunch partner. If you are resident, or on holiday here, you will know that the markets are also at their luscious best. Overflowing with the fabulous, aforementioned tomatoes, enormous peaches, and apricots the colour of dawn, vast piles of haricots vert and fresh, damp lettuces. A poulet roti or a tranche de pate maison from the butcher's van, perhaps a baguette from Madame who sells a little bit of this and a little bit of that, then pull out the red checked cloth and lunch can be served.
