Orne Property for Sale

The Orne is the most southerly department of Normandy and has a population of only 300,000. Due to its relief of forested hills and deep valley gorges reminiscent of Switzerland, it shares with Calvados the pays known as Suisse Normande. This is ideal countryside for walkers and naturalists, whilst further south, the Orne valley's rock faces and peaks are popular with climbers. Orne is also the equestrian centre of Normandy. The stud farm of Le Pin and its beautiful setting is renowned amongst horse lovers around the world.

The pretty town of Bagnoles de l'Orne has the unique claim of being the only spa town in Normandy. Its mineral waters claim to treat people with blood circulation disorders but it is also an attractive centre for walkers and cyclists visiting the nearby Foret d'Ecouves.

Other places worthy of a visit are Alencon, famous for its lace making and Domfront with panaoramic views over the Varenne gorge, dotted with pear orchards.

The Chateau D'O near Argentan is one of the finest Renaissance buildings in Normandy. This, a fairytale mansion, overlooking a beautiful lake and gardens should not be missed.

Finally, no visit to the area would be complete without visiting the home of the famous maker of the Camembert cheese at Vimoutiers. This delicious fromage was named after the nearby village of Camembert, where a statue of its inventor, Marie Harel, proudly stands. Golden and crunchy on the outside, and soft and creamy on the inside, it is truly a mouthwatering taste of Normandy.
