La Rochelle, jewel of the Atlantic coastIf it’s buckets, spades, sandcastles and lazy days on the beach you are after, then La Rochelle is not the resort for you.The nearby Ile de Ré – which is connected by a 2.9km bridge – is the spot for sandy beaches, or perhaps Royan which is further down the coast.
La Rochelle, however, continues to pull in the tourists by the tens of thousands. One reason for this is that this delightful place has managed to keep its historic atmosphere while at the same time still like feeling a modern and sophisticated town. The spiritual heart of La Rochelle - which was the last major stronghold in France to be surrendered by the Germans at the end of the Second World War - is the Vieux Port or Old Harbour. Here you can wander to look at the boats, watch some street theatre, admire the old stone buildings or have a meal in one of the many harbour restaurants. There is even a mini ‘China town’ of places offering oriental meals for those who crave some spice in their cuisine after a diet of French cooking. On the south side of the harbour one of the port’s distinctive towers the Tour Saint-Nicolas offers some fine views both of the old town and out to sea. In fact history is hard to avoid in the town; it was a stronghold of French Protestantism in the 16th and 17th centuries and was besieged by the French king’s forces for 14 months from September 1627. Just inside from the harbour there are some fine old streets full of shops, many of which would not look out of place in Paris. In what is a very charming but largely rural region of France, La Rochelle offers the visitor a haven of sophistication. The town also offers some more traditional seaside attractions. There is a fine aquarium plus what is claimed to be the country’s largest zoo. You can also take boat trips from the harbour, for example to the Ile d’Aix, or around the fascinating Fort Boyard. This is a Napoleonic fort that became the location for a hit French TV show – which also had a British version. There are other ‘showbiz’ links with La Rochelle too. The U-boat scenes from the hit Harrison Ford film Raiders of the Lost Ark were shot at La Rochelle. And Oscar Dahl, author of the celebrated author Roald, ran a fishing business there. La Rochelle is also a popular stopping off point for cruise liners sailing in and out of the Bay of Biscay.
