Mayenne is the second largest town in the Mayenne department. It sits astride the Mayenne river, which is dominated by the castle and basilica. The two sides of the town are known after their churches – Notre-Dame on the western bank and St-Martin on the eastern bank.
Ambrières-les-Vallées is a large village, set on a hill on the main road south from the port of Caen to the Loire valley. The Varenne river runs through the lower part of the town, and then flows south towards Mayenne.
