The telecom market is a fast moving one, with major investment in the national network continuing until 2022. Much of the equipment in local exchanges was up to 40 years old and not suitable for simple upgrading or replacement. Instead a new network of services is becoming available throughout France, with the biggest beneficiaries being cities and urban areas. For example rural areas will not have such good access to fibre cables that give very fast broadband. However the general upgrading will bring faster broadband to more people and replace old services such as a line with a separate broadband service, known as ‘degroupage partiel’ ceasing to be available since November 2018.
Other services such as Orange’s ‘ligne residence secondaire’ which was available for those who used a property as a second home. It enabled them to suspend their line rental and broadband when they were away. This service was withdrawn in May of 2018. There are alternatives such as Orange’s SOSH and SFR’s RED, both broadband products designed for short periods of use. They cost more than a standard broadband and have an activation and suspension cost. Each time one of these services is restarted they are assigned a new telephone number, and if they are kept live for longer periods the cost jumps significantly.
With its 15 years of experience providing telecom services to residents in France and benefiting from many years of steady growth, UKTelecom launched new broadband packages and mobile services in time for The France Show at Olympia, London, this January.
New Broadband Offer
For the first time UKTelecom is offering a low cost introductory offer of 31.95€ per month for the first 12 month. The normal price is 36.50€ per month thereafter.
Suspend Broadband, Save Up To 125.00€ per year
25% of UKTelecom customers are second home owners and although Orange has withdrawn their suspension offer for second home owners it was decided that we would be unique in offering this, but to all customers as many living in France permanently take extended holidays. The service can be suspended for up to 4 months in a 12 month period and there are no activation or suspension fees, no change of number and needing only an email to start saving.
Permanent Broadband Is Not For Everybody
Those searching for a property and others with shorter term needs do not want to commit to a 12 month broadband contract and for them we have a great mobile ‘hot spot’ that provides internet access for up to 9 devices at the same time, has no long term contract and is a pay as you go service. Additional credit can be added on line using an English language web site where any internationally recognised credit card is accepted.
Pre-Paid Mobile SIMs
similarly, low cost mobile sims that can be used anywhere in Europe with an unblocked mobile are very popular. Unlike most, any unused credit at the end of the month is not lost, as is the case with many similar services.
It’s not all about the ‘sale’
For many years we have been helping customers who are moving to France or within France set up broadband in their new homes. There is a while you wait search to find the broadband speed available at any property being considered for purchase – a very welcome service for those who do not want to buy in an ‘internet black hole’ area. In fact this installation service is requested by more than 95% of our new customers. For a small one off fee we look after the whole of the process, where necessary translating between engineers and our customers to ensure a satisfactory connection.
