News Digest: €500 million initiative for US scientists & public transport strikes in France
This week in France brings a mix of commemoration, opportunity, and disruption. The EU has announced a €500 million initiative to attract top US scientists, while VE Day events are under way across the country. Prospective property buyers can take advantage of a live Q&A with agent Ginny Mimault for personalised advice on buying in France. Meanwhile, widespread strikes affecting transport and public services are set to continue into June, with key disruptions expected around public holidays.
1. €500 million package to encourage American experts to relocate to Europe
In a bold move to position Europe as a global hub for scientific excellence, the European Union has unveiled a €500 million initiative aimed at attracting top-tier researchers, particularly those from the United States disillusioned by recent policy shifts under the Trump administration. Announced at the “Choose Europe for Science” event held at the Sorbonne University in Paris, the program offers substantial incentives including “super grants,” extended contracts, and enhanced relocation packages to entice scientists to relocate to Europe.
2. VE Day Commemorations Begin
France has begun commemorations for the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day. Reims, where Germany’s surrender was signed in 1945, is hosting a series of events this week leading up to May 8th. Expect military parades, school-led memorials, and poignant tributes across the country, especially in northern and eastern regions heavily affected by WWII.
3. Ask an Estate Agent – What would you like to know about buying in France?
Ginny Mimault will answer questions on buying and selling in France in our upcoming FrenchEntree Member Q&A on the 15th of May at 4pm (London). This is a rare opportunity to enjoy a face-to-face chat with an experienced agent and receive honest, personalised advice on the issues that matter to you. Numbers are strictly limited and there will be no pre-prepared presentations: just an entire hour devoted to answering your questions live! Unlike other webinars, you can even turn on your audio or video and put your question to Ginny directly (if you’re shy, don’t worry, the chat function will be active too!)
4. Widespread Transport and Public Service Strikes
If you’re planning to travel in or move to France during May and June 2025, be prepared for widespread industrial action that could impact transport and public services. The national rail operator, SNCF, is facing a series of rolling strikes by train drivers, controllers, and maintenance workers, with key dates including 5–11 May, 6 May (maintenance), 7 May (drivers), and 9–11 May (TGV controllers). These strikes are part of a broader protest running from 17 April to 2 June, primarily affecting weekend services. Disruption is expected to intensify around the May 8 public holiday (Victory in Europe Day) and Ascension Day on May 29.
