Why buy in Perpignan? French Buying Hotspot

Perpignan

Just 10 minutes from the Mediterranean coast and a stone’s throw from the Spanish border, Perpignan, capital of Pyrénées-Orientales, is fiercely proud of its Catalan roots. Much of its historical architecture dates from the 13th and 14th centuries when it was the continental capital of Majorca. Today, it’s a modern and chic place to live, known for its wine, olive oil and cork production.

Whether you’re planning to relocate permanently or you’re looking for a holiday pied-à-terre, if you enjoy the buzz of city living, Perpignan could be the perfect base for you. There’s great shopping here, pretty canal-side bistros, beautiful parkland and arts and culture galore.

The surrounding area is popular with tourists. They come, not only for sun, sea and sand, but also for the area’s rich history (Carcassonne is only an hour away), or to ski in the nearby Pyrénées.

To the east of Perpignan is the coastal resort area known as the Côte Sablonneuse – ‘the sandy coast’, which has an incredible beach that gets busy in the summer but is peaceful place to retreat to during the low season. Further along the coast are the wild unspoilt pine forests, garrigue and lagoons of the Parc naturel régional de la Narbonnaise. For a complete change of scene, hop on a train to Barcelona (you could be there in just an hour and 20 minutes).

The really good news is that the airport is right on your doorstep, with regular flights to and from London and Birmingham. The weather here is, of course, hot in the summer with pleasant off-shore breezes to cool things down, while the winters are mild and sometimes rainy.

Apartments in the centre of Perpignan start at around €125,000 for a two-bedroom property depending on the spec, while for something more substantial you could bag an off-plan four-bedroom villa (perfect for a family) for €300,000. We’ve also spied farmhouses and mas starting at €500,000 and vineyards and châteaux for upwards of €1.2 million in the surrounding countryside. So if you fancy city living with fabulous beaches and so much more within easy reach, make Perpignan your home in the sun.
