TREIGNAC

Limousin

Standing next to the Vézère river, Treignac is situated in the north part of Corrèze, Limousin. As a former winner of the coveted ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’ award (singling out the prettiest villages in France), Treignac certainly has the credentials to back up its appeal. With a population of less than 2,000 people, the village has managed to retain its charm and quaintness, drawing in visitors with its medieval architecture and picturesque location.

Nearby is the Lac des Bariousses, a 99-hectare lake that offers water sports and the perfect spot to cool off in summer. If that sounds too leisurely for your liking, a Total Wipeout-esque water park was introduced at the lake in 2016 (brilliantly named the ‘Treign’Aqua Park’), offering the perfect attraction for kids, young or grown-up. Along similar lines, the river that runs through Treignac can be lively – it’s fast-moving enough to have hosted the world championships for canoe descents.

Climate-wise, Limousin experiences distinct seasons, with summers reaching an enjoyable 25 degrees, and winters bringing an annual helping of snow. The topography is largely level, providing suitable land for those hoping to establish a smallholding or those looking for far-reaching  uninterrupted views over one of France’s greenest and most bucolic landscapes.

Prices in Corrèze are attractive, offering prospective buyers a lot of land for their money. A three-bedroom house with a large garden can be found for less than €100,000 and although such properties may need some updating and refreshing, they will be immediately habitable. Increasing the budget will open up more options such as character properties and houses with large amounts of land, providing revenue-generating opportunities and self-sufficiency.

Nearby airports in Limoges, Bergerac and Brive offer good access to Limousin by air, and Corrèze is around six hours’ drive from the country’s northern ferry ports.
