UZÈS, Gard, Occitanie

A shining example of la France profonde, you’ll find this picturesque town buried comfortably between olive groves, sunflower fields and lavender in the Gard département. Uzès is one of the region’s lesser-known gems, just a short distance from Provence and an easy drive from the famous Camargue marshes and south coast.

If people come to the town for its postcard-worthy setting, though, they stay for the lifestyle, which is positively languid. The Mediterranean climate plays a huge part in this, blessing Uzès with hot summers and warm, sleepy autumn months. Rarely are residents in a hurry: sipping their morning coffee in the cobbled Place aux Herbes, meandering around weekly markets in the same square and browsing the smattering of boulangeries and  specialised boutiques. The medieval streets and architecture similarly appear unaffected by time, thanks to a renovation project in the 1950s, under the guidance of André Malraux, which restored the town to its former glory. Today, the fusion of old and new makes for a charming place to call home.

If you’re looking for your own slice of life here, the first thing to do is make sure you’re equipped with a healthy budget. After all, rubbing shoulders with Provence and boasting strong transport links with Nîmes and Avignon puts Uzès (and its neighbouring villages) in a highly desirable position. Apartments in the town centre are a popular choice, as basically everything is within walking distance, whilst luxury villas and Provençal farmhouses on the fringes can climb into six-digit figures.

Thanks to the area’s excellent tourism credentials – including the UNESCO-listed Pont du Gard aqueduct a stone’s throw away – buy-to-let properties are a very real option. Long-term rentals are in high demand and there is also a strong, but highly competitive, short-term holiday rental market, which would go some way towards paying for a second mortgage should you choose to rent out your property. For those hoping to put in a little muscle, meanwhile, renovations could be a good way to supply the rental market in this neck of the woods.
