Where to Buy in France Hotspot: Dinan, Brittany

Brittany certainly has a lot going for it – wide expanses of sandy beaches, lush countryside, bracing coastal walks and delicious seafood (not to mention ideally located ferry ports) – it’s no wonder that so many of us Brits regularly head here to live, work and play

Introducing Dinan

A few miles inland from Saint-Malo, you’ll find Dinan – a pretty, historic town with almost two miles of ramparts, half-timbered houses and wonderful cobbled streets to explore. Around its old port (which you can sail to from Saint-Malo), you’ll find a mixture of traditional stone houses and waterside restaurants – perfect for an evening out.

Dinan: Location & Accessibility

Getting to Dinan from the UK couldn’t be easier and this has made it a popular spot for those seeking a holiday home, weekend bolthole or spot to relocate to within reach of family back home. There are several cross Channel ferry options including services from Plymouth to Roscoff and Portsmouth to Saint Malo, as well as Caen, Cherbourg and Le Havre, plus Poole to Cherbourg. And if you’d rather travel by air, there are regional airports at Rennes and Quimper.

Dinan: What to Buy

In and around Dinan, you’ll find plenty of typical Brittany properties to drool over, from Breton longères and neo-Breton homes with white walls and slate roofs to quaint stone townhouses and chaumières (thatched cottages). Renovation projects tend to be few and far between because of the area’s longstanding popularity with British buyers but if you are looking for a gîte business or B&B to take over, you should be in luck.

Dinan: Property Prices

Dinan’s location inland from the coast (though within easy reach of Saint-Malo’s ferry port and chic dining and shopping opportunities) means prices are reasonable.

Two-/three-bedroom apartments in its historic centre start at around €250,000. You can bag a stone-built family home outside the town for as little as €200,000, while large character properties with lots of land will set you back upwards of €700,000. Gîte prices vary, of course, but we’ve spied a great business opportunity comprising a three-bedroom property in several acres with three gîtes for €920,000.
