Where to Buy in France – Hesdin: Buying Hotspots

Pas-de-Calais

One of France’s most northerly départements, Pas-de-Calais is also one of its most densely populated. Once an industrial powerhouse, it has a rich history and more than its fair share of fortified towns, belfries, war monuments and museums. Its coastline, Côte d’Opale, is a big draw and tourists flock to its  – among them Le Touquet, Ambleteuse and Boulogne-sur-Mer.

If you’re looking to set up house in France within easy reach of family back home, buy a weekend bolthole to escape to in super-quick time, or start a B&B business where there’s a good source of business on tap – then this is the perfect place to do it. However, as those in the know will tell you, the nearer to the coast you look, the higher the property prices will be. For this reason, you’d be wise to widen your search area to include the numerous towns and villages inland where you can snap up a property for a fraction of the cost, but still be within striking distance of the bustling coastal resorts.

One such gem is Hesdin. It’s a pretty-as-a-picture market town, located in a particularly scenic area of countryside called the Seven Valleys, at the confluence of two rivers. As well as flower-bedecked, Flemish-style buildings and everything you need amenities- wise, it’s only half-an-hour’s drive from the chic resort of Le Touquet.

Hesdin is within easy reach of the UK too, via the northern ferry ports and the Channel Tunnel. Regular ferry crossings operate between Dover and Calais, and Newhaven and Dieppe. It’s just over an hour’s drive from Calais and an hour and a half from Dieppe. By train, it takes an hour and a half from Calais and you can be in Paris in a little over three hours. Paris-Beauvais airport is the closest – an hour and a half away.

In the historic centre of Hesdin, there are town houses and modest family homes to be had – albeit without much outdoor space. A three-bedroom property can be yours for as little as €150,000. Just slightly outside the town, you’ll find yourself in lush countryside with sizeable character properties with outhouses and several acres starting at €200,000. We’ve also spied plots of land for building your own home minutes from the town for €38,000.
